How to properly clean the internal oil stains of a stainless steel air fryer

Stainless steel air fryers are prized for their durability, aesthetics, and excellent cooking performance, but cleaning their interior grease can often be a challenge. Proper cleaning methods not only preserve the appliance's aesthetics but also extend its lifespan and ensure the hygienic and delicious taste of your food.

1. Preliminary Preparation and Cooling

Before cleaning, ensure the air fryer is completely unplugged and cooled sufficiently. Cleaning at high temperatures not only poses a risk of burns, but can also cause deformation or coating loss due to temperature differences. First, unplug the appliance, remove the basket and fryer liner, and allow the main unit to cool to room temperature. This step is the foundation for all subsequent cleaning procedures.

2. Deep Cleaning Core Components: Basket and Fryer Liner

The basket and fryer liner are the most susceptible to grease accumulation. Since they typically have a non-stick coating, they require special attention.

Soaking Method: For minor grease stains, soak the basket and fryer liner in warm, soapy water for about 30 minutes. The warm water helps dissolve the grease, while a neutral detergent gently removes buildup.

Baking Soda Paste: For stubborn baked-on grease stains, make a baking soda paste. Mix the baking soda with a small amount of water to form a thick paste and apply evenly to the greased area. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then gently wipe with a soft cloth or sponge. Baking soda has natural stain-removing and odor-removing properties without damaging the non-stick coating.

Lemonade or White Vinegar: If there is an odor, spray the inner pot with a mixture of lemon juice or white vinegar and water. These naturally kill bacteria and remove odors. Then wipe clean with a soft cloth.

Note: When cleaning these parts, never use steel wool, hard scrubbers, or any abrasive cleaners. These can permanently scratch the non-stick coating, making it more likely for food to stick during future cooking and potentially affecting the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel.

3. Cleaning the Interior: Heating Tube and Interior Walls

The interior of the air fryer, particularly around the heating tube and on the inner walls, is another area prone to grease and grease. These areas are generally not suitable for direct water washing.

Disconnecting and inspecting the power cord: Before cleaning the main unit, double-check that the power cord is unplugged. Use a flashlight to inspect the heating element and interior for visible grease or food residue.

Wet cloth cleaning: Use a soft cloth lightly dampened with neutral detergent, wrung out, and then wipe the interior of the air fryer. For the heating element, use a smaller, soft cloth or cotton swab and carefully wipe the surface. Be careful not to pull or bend the element.

Steam cleaning: For hard-to-reach stains, try steam cleaning. Place a small amount of water in the fryer (taking care not to touch the heating element) and briefly turn it on. The steam will soften the stain, making it easier to remove with a soft cloth. This method requires extreme caution and safety.

Specialized cleaning agents: There are commercially available cleaning foams specifically for ovens or air fryers. These products can be sprayed on the stain, left to sit for a while, and then wiped off with a soft cloth. They are generally effective in breaking down grease, but be sure to read the instructions before use to ensure they are safe for stainless steel and internal components.

4. Cleaning the Stainless Steel Casing and Fan

Although stainless steel casings are impervious to dirt and grime, fingerprints, water stains, and light oil stains can still affect their appearance.

Cleaning the Casing: Wipe the cassette surface with a soft, damp cloth, then dry it with a dry cloth to prevent water marks. For brushed stainless steel, wipe in the direction of the grain to avoid creating new scratches.

Cleaning the Fan: The fan on top of the air fryer is a core component, but it easily accumulates oil smoke and dust. Use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush to gently brush dust off the fan blades. For heavy oil stains, use a cotton swab lightly dampened with alcohol to carefully wipe, but be careful not to allow liquid to get into the motor.

5. Maintenance and Care Recommendations

Proper cleaning is more than just washing; it's also a daily maintenance procedure. Clean the fryer basket and fryer liner after each use to prevent stubborn oil stains from settling. Regularly wipe the stainless steel fryer body with a soft cloth to maintain its mirror-polished or brushed finish. Avoid using any cleaning agents containing chlorides or abrasive ingredients, as these will destroy the stainless steel's protective chromium oxide layer and reduce its corrosion resistance. Store the device in a dry and ventilated place, avoiding humid environments.
